Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon when a woman lost her life after being struck by a police vehicle on a beach in Horry County. The unidentified woman, who was facing east on Nash Street in the Myrtle Beach area, was hit by a 2020 Ford Ranger Pickup truck driven by a Horry County police officer. The incident occurred around 1 p.m., casting a somber shadow over the picturesque shoreline.

The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. The impact left the woman severely injured, and she was swiftly transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, piecing together the events that led to this heartbreaking outcome. The Horry County Police Department expressed their condolences, acknowledging the pain felt by the community. “What occurred on the beach yesterday was a tragedy, and we know our community is hurting,” the department stated. “Our hearts are with all those impacted by this loss. We also know our community has questions. We do too”,

Denis Miller, a witness who was present at the scene, recounted the aftermath of the collision. “From my point of view, I had my back turned. I heard somebody yell ‘There’s somebody that’s been run over,’” Miller said. “We ran over here, and yeah, there’s a lady on the ground and there’s a truck on top of her”.

This unfortunate incident isn’t the first of its kind in Horry County. In 2020, another woman survived after being struck by a Horry County police patrol car while on a beach in Garden City. However, the recent tragedy underscores the need for vigilance and safety precautions in beachfront areas. In late May, a Florida police sergeant was cited for careless driving after hitting two sunbathers with his patrol vehicle in Daytona Beach. Both women were hospitalized, highlighting the risks posed by beach patrol vehicles.
