Cocoa Beach, Florida – On a serene morning by the Florida shore, a seemingly harmless beach umbrella turned into a perilous weapon, impaling a woman’s leg. The incident occurred on June 24, 2024, around 9:00 a.m. in Cocoa Beach.
What Happened? Sybil Licht and her family were enjoying the sun and surf when a sudden gust of wind dislodged a rental umbrella from the sand. The umbrella transformed into a projectile, striking Sybil’s left leg. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, using bolt cutters to carefully remove the canopy from the pole. Sybil was then airlifted to the hospital for treatment. Fortunately, she is now in stable condition.

Previous Incidents: This incident isn’t isolated. Last year, a similar tragedy occurred in South Carolina, where a 63-year-old woman lost her life after an umbrella impaled her chest. In 2016, a strong wind uprooted a beach umbrella in Virginia, resulting in the death of a 55-year-old woman celebrating her birthday and anniversary. Shockingly, between 2018 and 2021, approximately 1,700 beach umbrella-related injuries were treated in hospital emergency departments.
Safety Measures: To prevent such accidents, follow these safety guidelines:
- Anchor Firmly: Spike the umbrella pole securely into the sand.
- Tilt Against the Wind: Angle the umbrella to prevent it from blowing away.
- Weight the Base: Use an anchor or weight to keep the umbrella stable.
