North Topsail Beach, North Carolina – On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the tranquility of North Topsail Beach was shattered when a 14-year-old boy became the victim of a shark attack. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. near Beach Access number four.
The Attack: Blayne Brown, a West Virginia native, was swimming in the crystal-clear waters when a shark struck. The predator bit him twice on his leg and ankle. Bystanders sprang into action, pulling Blayne out of the water and providing immediate first aid. Towels were used to stem the bleeding, and pressure was applied to the wounds. Fortunately, police officers and EMS were already on-site for another call, allowing them to swiftly assist Blayne. They applied a tourniquet, and EMS stabilized him before rushing him to the nearest trauma center. Thanks to their quick response, doctors were able to repair his leg.
Recovery and Gratitude: Blayne is now recovering well and is expected to be released soon. North Topsail Beach Police Chief William K. Younginer expressed gratitude to the bystanders who acted promptly. He emphasized that shark attacks are unusual in this area, and there were no prior reports of shark sightings. The incident serves as a reminder to beachgoers to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines.
Safety Tips: As summer draws more people to the ocean, here are some tips to reduce the risk of shark encounters:
- Swim with a Buddy: Avoid going into the water alone.
- Avoid Dawn and Dusk: Sharks may mistake swimmers for prey during low-light hours.
- Stay Away from Fishing Areas: Sharks are attracted to fishing activity.
- Skip Shiny Jewelry: Glinting jewelry can resemble fish.
- Minimize Splashing: Splashing sounds mimic struggling fish, which can attract sharks.
North Topsail Beach, located along the Atlantic Ocean, remains a picturesque destination despite this rare incident. Let’s continue to enjoy the sun, sand, and surf while staying informed and cautious
